My New Toy

Question: What's blue, built like a tank, and makes a mean batch of bars?

Answer: My new cobalt blue Kitchen Aid Mixer!

While doing my baking last Thanksgiving, my 25 year old Oster Kitchen Center mixer/blender/shredder/chopper made several awful clunks and gave up the ghost! So for Christmas I asked for a new mixer and my brother gifted me with this beauty!

I must say I have "mixed" feelings about the mixer. I finally tested it out on the bar recipes I made a week ago and it does take some getting used to. I wish I could get a spatula into the bowl and scrape it down while the mixer is going - it bugs me that I have to stop, scrape, and start all the time. And I still have flour flying all over the place every time I add it! (Maybe someone out there has suggestions for me! ) But it does have great power! And I'm excited to have dough hooks again - the ones I had for my old mixer broke years ago and I couldn't get replacements. And I do feel like I've joined the "official mixer of the Food Network" club! So I'm sure with time I'll learn to like it "batter."

I love my KitchenAid stand mixer, and I wouldn't trade it in for anything. When you add flour, you could try draping a lightweight towel over the whole thing - that's what one of my recipe books suggests. I usually add the flour gradually and keep it on the lowest speed, and I seldom have flour flying around. I hope you come to love it as much as I do!

Thanks for the suggestion! I never thought of draping a towel around it - that's such an easy idea! I will try that next time.

I think my mom has a plastic attachment for her bowl that is a lip so that stuff doesn't spray all over the place.

As for the stopping to scrape, I have always just turned it off, lowered the bowl and scraped out the sides. I've been working with KA mixers for 15 years or so and haven't found a better way to do this
